Some villagers, like 18-year-old Abdullah Jan, have to walk for hours before reaching Shaddle. The tiredness on his face explains it all - if he is stopped by government agents or bandits he would lose money that feeds his family for the entire year.
"I left at four in the morning and got here after four hours. I have brought 10kg of opium from my fields to sell."
After a hard bargain with Gul Mohammad Khan, the opium dealer, he is getting the equivalent of $1,400 - more than he can get for any other crop.
He is one of hundreds of people who travel to Shaddle bazaar to sell and buy opium.
The US has recently given the Afghan government more than $10bn in assistance, but most of the money will be spent on security rather than encouraging alternative sources of income.
Afghanistan produces 92 percent of the world's opium, a thick paste from poppy used to make heroin, according to the latest U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime report.
That is the equivalent of 3,500 tonnes leaving the country each year.
Helmand produces most of the poppy.
About two thirds of the opium is turned into heroin before it leaves Afghanistan and goes on to feed some 15 million addicts, mainly in Russia, Iran and Europe.
UN findings say an opium market worth $65bn (£39bn) funds global terrorism, caters to 15 million addicts, and kills 100,000 people every year.
Since 2005, the Taliban have made up to $160 million (0.2% market) a year from taxing cultivation and trade of the crop, according to foreign diplomats.
The UN says corruption, lawlessness and uncontrolled borders result in only 2% of Afghan opiates being seized locally.
The UN says more Russians die annually from Afghan drugs than Soviet soldiers were killed during its Afghan conflict.
The UN estimates that Afghan land dedicated to opium poppy cultivation — some 45,000 to 65,000 hectares — is up to eight and a half times larger than the amount for 2001.
Antonio Maria Costa, head of the UNODC, said Afghanistan's opium production could create a "perfect storm" in the region.
"The Afghanistan/Pakistan border region has turned into the world's largest free-trade zone in anything and everything that is illicit - drugs of course, but also weapons, bomb-making equipment, chemical precursors, drug money, even people and migrants," he said.
Iran intercepts about 20% of the opium entering its territory and Pakistan 17% - but Russia and some European countries are seizing less than 5%.
One gram of heroin worth $3 in Kabul is worth up to $100 on the streets of London, Milan or Moscow, it is estimated.

Britain and US plan to stop heroin trade by buying Afghan opium crop (Haha)
By Francis Elliott, Deputy Political Editor
Kemal Kurspahic, a spokesman for the Vienna-based UN Office of Drug Control and Crime Prevention (UNDCCP), said: "The sowing season is October and early November. Many farmers are now free of Taliban control and our staff in Pakistan have received reports that some are planting. We will only know in February how many poppy fields there are when they begin to grow."
Although the United States and Britain had accused the Taliban of relaxing its ban on poppy farming, the UN says farmers are acting out of desperation and the absence of anyone to enforce the proscription of the trade.
It also believes that the bulk of the drug is being produced in alliance strongholds.
And look at how it has effected the neighbours.....
Russia now 'top heroin consumer'
Russia says it has become the world's biggest consumer of heroin.
Mr Ivanov, a former KGB officer and senior Kremlin official, said the flood of the drug from Afghanistan posed a threat to Russia's national security.
"In recent years Russia has not just become massively hooked on Afghan opiates, it has also become the world's absolute leader in the opiate trade and the number one heroin consumer," he said in a report made available to reporters."
The Russian health ministry says Russia has up to 2.5 million drug addicts out of a population of some 140 million, most of them aged between 18 and 39.
And over in the UK......
Why do we so willfully cover up the failure of the war on drugs?
Angus Macqueen 1 August 2010
The vulnerable are left unprotected by our attitudes to substance abuse.
Asuccess rate of 1%. In what area of public life would we accept that? Last year, Professor Neil McKeganey of the University of Glasgow, one of the most respected academics in Britain, established that the authorities seize just 1% of the heroin that enters Scotland in any one year.
He sees no reason to think this would be any different for the nation as a whole.
If heroin gets in, we can only suppose cocaine and other drugs are smuggled in equally successfully. Gordon Meldrum, of the Scottish branch of the Serious Organised Crime Agency, tasked with coordinating our battle against drugs smuggling, shrugs: "1% or 10% – it is not good enough."
He claims that a breakthrough in targeting top smugglers is around the corner, but when asked if there is any chance of achieving the 60-70% target the United Nations estimates would be required to change fundamentally the market in illegal drugs, he simply shakes his head.

Fluffy white things in the sky? No, not clouds! Chem-trails! The chemicals that are dispensed in the air from planes. Fact or fiction?
We’ve all seen it, the white vapour that floats from the back of some planes, often making patterns of criss-cross lines which hover in the blue sky for hours.
First, we must distinguish between the phenomena of chem-trails and contrails, which are short for condensation-trails that are perfectly natural for planes flying at certain altitudes.
A contrail is condensed water vapour which forms on the hot exhaust from a jet aircraft. Contrails form under very specific conditions such as high relative humidity and low temperature, which is why they are seen high up (30,000-40,000ft) where the air is very cold.
The existence of chem.-trails has been repeatedly denied by government agencies and scientists around the world.
The term chem-trail is derived from ‘chemical trail’, the term specifically refers to aerial trails caused by the systematic high-altitude release of chemical substances not found in ordinary contrails, resulting in the appearance of unusual patterns.
Chem-trails do not refer to forms of aerial spraying such as crop dusting, cloud seeding or aerial fire-fighting.
The United States Air Force has stated that the theory is a hoax which "has been investigated and refuted by many established and accredited universities, scientific organisations, and major media publications".
The British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has stated that chemtrails "are not scientifically recognised phenomena".
The Canadian Government House Leader has stated that "The term 'chem-trails' is a popularized expression, and there is no scientific evidence to support their existence."
Or is there any evidence?
A 60-page government report released five years ago provided for the first time a comprehensive official history of Britain’s biological weapons trials between 1940 and 1979.
Many of these tests involved releasing potentially dangerous chemicals and micro-organisms over vast swaths of the population without the public being told.
The report reveals that military personnel were briefed to tell any ‘inquisitive inquirer’ the trials were part of research projects into weather and air pollution
The tests, carried out by government scientists at Porton Down, a UK Government and Military science park, were designed to help the MoD assess Britain’s vulnerability if the Russians were to have released clouds of deadly germs over the country.
In most cases, the trials did not use biological weapons but alternatives which scientists believed would mimic germ warfare and which the MoD claimed were harmless yet these ‘harmless’ substances were never tested beforehand to see how harmless they would be to the local population. Families in certain areas of the country who have children with birth defects have demanded a public inquiry.
In 1956 bacteria were released on the London Underground at lunchtime along the Northern Line between Colliers Wood and Tooting Broadway. The results show that the organism dispersed about 10 miles. Similar tests were conducted in tunnels running under government buildings in Whitehall.
One chapter of the report, ‘The Fluorescent Particle Trials’, reveals how between 1955 and 1963 planes flew from north-east England to the tip of Cornwall along the south and west coasts, dropping huge amounts of zinc cadmium sulphide on the population. The chemical drifted miles inland, its fluorescence allowing the spread to be monitored.
While the Government has insisted the chemical is safe, cadmium is recognised as a cause of lung cancer and during the Second World War was considered by the Allies as a chemical weapon.
In another chapter, 'Large Area Coverage Trials', the MoD describes how between 1961 and 1968 more than a million people along the south coast of England, from Torquay to the New Forest, were exposed to bacteria including e.coli and bacillus globigii , which mimics anthrax. These releases came from a military ship, the Icewhale, anchored off the Dorset coast, which sprayed the micro-organisms in a five to 10-mile radius.
Since the start of such military research we have seen the sperm count in males’ drop 50% in the average American College in the last 50 years as well as a huge rise in testicular cancer in the last 20 years.
Sue Ellison, spokeswoman for Porton Down, said: ‘Independent reports by eminent scientists have shown there was no danger to public health from these releases which were carried out to protect the public.
‘The results from these trials will save lives, should the country or our forces face an attack by chemical and biological weapons.’
Asked whether such tests are still being carried out, she said: ‘It is not our policy to discuss ongoing research.’

Here stands the new age man, his conception of reality is a collection of electronic images fired into his fore-brain.
The constant bombardment of electronic images during someone’s lifetime will shape that person’s opinions, knowledge and morals through either the conscious or subconscious.
Is it a positive that mass media is owned by a select few?
All of American television can be traced to only 5 corporations.
Ask a hypnotist how powerful the spoken word can be and you’ll realise there is the capability to manipulate the masses through a simple political speech. Hitler’s speechwriter Joseph Goebbels being one of the masters of the art.
Hollywood has been conditioning people’s opinions since the successful use of propaganda techniques by the Nazi’s in the Second World War.
Noam Chomsky, intellectual author and philosopher has said "Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state."
After the World War the man who re-branded propaganda as ‘public relations’ for Western governments was Edward Bernays,
Edward Bernays, nephew of psychologist Sigmund Freud, advised Hollywood on product placement as he believed “the invisible government” could use propaganda to make money and guide public opinion in times of peace after World War II.
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organised habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society” Bernays said.
Therefore, there has been a constant need for a relationship between the CIA and Hollywood.
X-files actor Dean Haglund, has said: “Hollywood has been tracking parties since the 80s…..They want to make sure the writers and producers are not making anything too radical which doesn’t agree with their foreign policy.”
Were the makers of Star Trek briefed to help them create their vision of the future?
Star Trek used the modern mobile phone in 1964 for use between crew members and to contact other ships when most people would not see or touch a mobile for another 25 years.
Was that good creative foresight or has someone in the know been aware of technological developments?
‘Terminator’ (1984), ‘Universal Solder’ (1992), ‘A.I. ‘(2001), ‘I-Robot’ (2004) are all movies that feature the cyber intelligence community becoming more sophisticated with devastating consequences for humanity.
In the real world, robots could fill the jobs of 3.5 million people in Japan by 2025, with one machine being able to do the work of 10 men.
Anyone who has paid attention to the development of the RFID (Radio frequency identification) chip will understand that man is becoming increasingly robotic.
From ‘The War of the Worlds’ (2005, 1953) to ‘ District 9’ (2009) to ET (1982), Hollywood has also had a fascination with aliens and embedded that into you since you were a child.
If came true, this extra terrestrial threat would no doubt bring governments and people together to co-ordinate action.
This vision was shared by former US President Ronald Reagan when he addressed the United Nations in 1987, he said: “We often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world.”
This world coming together has been shown in many films over the years. ‘Happy Feet’ (2006) and ‘Independence Day’ (1996) are examples of two very different movies but with a unifying message, through either global warming or an alien attack the Governments of the world should unite as one to conquer man’s problems.
In the last 10 years we have seen a huge up-rise in disaster movies along with the momentum from the ‘Climate Change’ lobby to cut C02 emissions and a variety of ‘green’ taxes.
“The Day After Tomorrow’ (2004), ‘The Happening’ (2008) and soon released ‘2012’ are all movies that show apocalyptic times through natural disasters.
The silenced are the 31,000 scientists, over 900 PhD’s, who have signed the ‘Global Warming Petition Project’ stating that global warming is natural and not a crisis, status quo though wouldn’t make a good movie.
Truth mixed with fiction creates something trivial.
So remember when you next go to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster movie with amazing CGI effects, there may be more than meets the eye.
Be aware for the messages that are hidden in plain sight.

Sir Charles Galton Darwin (1887–1962)
Hi All..... here are a few facts about a man who wrote a book entitled THE NEXT MILLION YEARS in 1952.
A British Aristocrat and High scientist, he had a tremendously big psychopathic ego and mouth which you will see from the quotes below (I know they seem long but please have a read).
However, here is an interesting fact file on old Charlies Grandson:-
1)Knight Commander (KBE) Of The British Empire
2)Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS)
3)Member of the British Eugenics Society (BES)
4)Director of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL)
5)Physicist who worked on MANHATTAN PROJECT (Atomic Bomb)
6)Grandson of Charles Darwin
7)Graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge (mathematics)
and finally look who his grandson married:-
George Pember Darwin (1928–2001) worked developing computers, and then (1964) married Angela Huxley, daughter of David Bruce Huxley. She was also a granddaughter of the writer Leonard Huxley and a great-granddaughter of Thomas Huxley, "Darwin's Bulldog".*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Galton_Darwin
Now here is some quotes from his book The Next Million Years Published in 1952:-
"Another type of discovery may be connected with hormones, those internal chemical secretions which so largely regulate the operations of the human body. The artificial use of hormones has already been shown to have profound effects on the behaviour of animals, and it seems quite possible that hormones, or perhaps drugs, might have similar effects on man. For example, there might be a drug, which, without other harmful effects, removed the urgency of sexual desire, and so reproduced in humanity the status of workers in a beehive. Or there might be another drug that produced a permanent state of contentment in the recipient—after all alcohol does something like this already, though it has other disadvantages and is only temporary in its effects. A dictator would certainly welcome the compulsory administration of the "contentment drug" to his subjects." p183
“I have already shown the short-term difficulties which seem to make it sure that no spontaneous process will avoid the menace of over-population. Is it possible that the statesmen of all countries, perceiving these dangers, should combine together to make and enforce a world-wide policy of limitation? It would have to be world-wide.....It is clear from all this that the world policy would need to be supported by international sanctions, and the only ultimate sanction must be war. Present methods of warfare would not be nearly murderous enough to reduce populations seriously, and even so they would take a nearly equal toll of victims from the unoffending nations. So after the war the question would arise of how to reduce the excess population of the offending nation. It is not possible to be humane in this, but the most humane method would seem to be infanticide together with the sterilization of a fraction of the adult population. Such sterilization could now be done without the brutal methods practised in the past, but it would certainly be vehemently resisted.” P148
In order to create such specialist breeds there would have to be a master breed at the summit, and this would be a totally different kind of thing from all the other breeds, because it would have to create itself.....At every turn the argument leads back to this question of the master breed. Nothing can be done in the way of changing man from a wild into a tame animal without first creating such a breed, but most people are entirely inconsistent in their ideas of what they want created.....It is, however, imaginable, that there might be a part of the world in which the breed was accepted, and that this part should gain a superiority over the rest of the world, because it could develop various suitable breeds of specialists under the control and direction of the master breed, and by the exercise of the skills of these specialists it might overcome the other nations. So it is appropriate to look a little further into the matter....Imagine that through new discoveries in biology, say by suitably controlled doses of X-rays, it becomes possible to modify the genes in any desired direction, so that heritable changes can be produced in the qualities of some members of the human race......But passing to more important matters, there might be created a breed which could think more abstractly, say a breed of mathematicians, or one that could think more judiciously, say a breed of higher civil servants. These would be of great value, but they would not be the master breed, and the question arises of a more precise prescription for what the qualities of the master breed are to be.....So the natural procedure would be to begin with existing rulers, since these have already established themselves as acceptable to at least a good many of their fellow creatures. One would collect together, say, a hundred of the most important present rulers - among them of course should be included a good many who exert secret influence without holding any overt office - and tell them to get on with the business of settling what the master breed should be. By 2020 there will be privatised virtual reality schools teaching the class while the pupils will be on the sofa with an i-pad scattered across the country or even the globe.
Your lectures will be on ‘Second Life’, a virtual world that can only be accessed through the internet.
‘Second Life’ now has 16 million accounts worldwide with more individuals and companies joining daily.
There will even be a virtual student union bar and exhibitions of work at your online campus.
You’ll be able to stay at home and tune in for lectures, email your work on deadlines and communicate interactively through your broadband connection.
The only problem is that it is a lacking in human social contact.
In an era of video games and digital television with all it’s variety, is it a surprise that the student will not be leaving his or her home
soon?
This will also give the opportunity to Government to raise more funds by selling the land and developments where the ‘extinct’ universities currently possess.
This movement of schools from the real world to virtual will be gradual but the early steps have already been taken.
Tesco are in the process of building a ‘Tesco Town’ next to the 2012 Olympics site which will house hundreds of families and come with its own high street, park, library and primary school.
If Tesco can build a primary school, why can’t News International run a journalism school?
Or the BBC have an online campus for its next generation of recruitment?
In a time of globalisation with international companies becoming increasingly powerful it is not far fetched to see them fully branch into education.
If such companies are employing people for many years then why not get to them younger and educate them in a format that is suitable for the chosen industry, by professionals for professionals.
Schools and Universities will be privatised as the Government’s urge to cut debt increases and avenues for outside funding become smaller.
Privatisation of the education system will give the major corporations an even larger dose of corporate responsibility.
The apprenticeship schemes developed by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown will grow and be integrated into the education system more which will offer students the opportunity to start working for a company instead of studying at a University.
This will be an example of technological progress but is it fair to say it is social progress as well?
